Leg 3, Britsh Columbia, Prince Rupert to Vancouver 570 nautical miles

            Day 1             Leaving Prince Rupert it was raining with a heavy fog, which would become all to familiar to me in the next 8 days. However, there was also a brisk, following breeze which allowed me to sail fast and comfortably, something that I would not experience again for over a week. As the day progressed, open, choppy water with the remnant of an ocean swell gave way to islands, and eventually to the narrow entrance to Grenville Channel, a 45-mile, nearly straight cut less than a quarter of a mile wide for the majority. Day 6

Today was a day of variables, both in terms of weather, and just in general. It started out with a cold early morning drizzle in Pender harbor as we left, and even before leaving the bay and heading out into Malaspina straits, the usual morning petty disputes between mom and I had escalated into a full scale row, with threats of mutiny and sulking at either end of the boat, myself at the helm and mom in the V-berth, with Carmen in the main cabin separating us. This boded ill for the voyage, as never being more than 28 feet apart at the very most, and forced to live in the same room day in and day out for the next week or more did not seem very pleasant. However, by around 11:00am, the sun came up, and with the help of some Jimmy Buffet ( Changes in Latitudes Changes in Attitudes was especially appropriate) and the wind off the port beam we soon made up and enjoyed the sailing. Pacific Mexico

Looking back on the eleven months of sailing, from Seldovia to Mexico, Hawai’i, and back to Washington, probably some of the most pleasant months were January and February of 2020, spent cruising up and down the pacific coast of Mexico. These were also probably the two months of the trip, besides growing barnacles in Hilo, where Darwind covered the least distance.              After leaving the island paradise of Isla Isabel, Darwind and Mamaku sailed in to band eras bay, to the cruiser’s hub of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, which would serve as a sort of base of operations for the next two months of cruising, surfing and preparing for the crossing to French Polynesia. Mamaku needed a new alternator for her engine, and Darwind needed two new battens for her mainsail, so Harry and crew went in search of a mechanic and I set off for the palm-thatched sail loft on the hill above the fancy and very bourgeoisie marina.
